How do I calculate mininum velocity to lift sand in a heavy oil well?

SNORGY (Mechanical) 20 Oct 09 19:59
Try using the theory outlined in GPSA Section 7 pages 1-4. Regards,

SNORGY.

Velocity= Displacement/ Time
Based on this equation, we can calculate the velocity i-e slip velocity of the sand

The slip velocity is dependent on the gel strength of the oil.

What about stokes law?  This is used quite often hydraulic fracturing simulations.

The settling velocity (Vs) is calculated using Stoke's law for small particles (Dp< 1mm).

Vs = [(RHOp-RHOf).g.(Dp)^2]/(18.mu)

RHO-density
p-particle
f-fluid
D-diameter
mu-dynamic viscosity of the fluid

All SI units.
